Trump to pull out of the Paris Agreement

The Obama Administration’s support for the Paris Agreement on climate change was seen as a major breakthrough even though opposition from the Republican Congress prevented a full climate change treaty.  But a Trump Presidency looks set to tear up the Agreement as part of the plan to “make America great again”.

Michael Finnegan at the Los Angeles Times reports that:

“Trump, who has often dismissed the science on climate change as a hoax that threatens American jobs, promised to cut all U.S. spending on United Nations programs on global warming.  Speaking at an oil and gas industry conference in Bismarck, N.D., he laid out an energy agenda that would rely heavily on fossil fuels and rescind Obama administration regulations aimed at addressing climate change.”

Since the USA consumes more than 25 percent of global energy, and produces the bulk of the world’s per-capita greenhouse gas emissions, less developed countries like China and India are unlikely to stick to the Paris targets without strong US participation.  Moreover , with declining Western economies like the UK adopting economic and energy policies that are at odds with their Paris Agreement climate targets, A Trump Presidency could well be the final nail in humanity’s coffin.
