Scientists at Umea University, Sweden warn that climate change is increasing the habitat range of mosquitos that were previously restricted to tropical regions.
A combination of tourism and warming has already allowed mosquitos to migrate into Southern Europe in high summer. However, as the northern hemisphere temperature increases, both the range and the time window for migration into Europe are widening.
The consequence of this change is already seen in North America as mosquitos carrying the Zika virus are migrating into Mexico and the southern states of the USA. In Europe there is now a real risk of Dengue Fever being spread into previously immune populations by migrating mosquitos.
